French EPR glossary

The terms you will meet when registering for Extended Producer Responsibility in France.

EPR / REP

Extended Producer Responsibility — responsabilité élargie du producteur. The producer finances the collection and recycling of its products and packaging.

Producer

The company that first makes a product or its packaging available on a given national market: manufacturer, importer or distributor.

Mandataire REP

The EPR representative established in France that a producer not established in France must appoint by written mandate (article L. 541-10-9-1).

Subrogation

Under the 2026 law, the representative steps into the producer's EPR obligations within the scope of the mandate.

Eco-organisme

A body approved by the French State to collect eco-contributions and organise collection and recycling for an EPR stream.

Eco-contribution

The fee a producer pays to its eco-organisme, based on units or weight and material, following a public tariff.

Eco-modulation

Bonus or penalty applied to eco-contributions depending on recyclability, recycled content or durability.

IDU

Identifiant unique — the French EPR registration number, one per stream, issued through ADEME's SYDEREP register.

ADEME

The French ecological transition agency, which runs the EPR register.

SYDEREP

ADEME's register where producers are recorded and IDUs are issued.

EPRO

Professional packaging EPR (REP emballages professionnels), with eco-contributions from 1 January 2027.

PPWR

EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (EU) 2025/40, applicable since 12 August 2026.

Authorised representative (PPWR)

A representative a producer appoints in a member state where it sells packaging directly to end users without being established there.

End user

A person or business using the product itself. A reseller is not an end user.

Triman

The French sorting logo required on consumer packaging and products in scope.

LUCID / VerpackDG

Germany's packaging register and the law that replaced the Packaging Act on 12 August 2026.
